The cities of Biddeford and Saco have long been a center for lumbering, textiles and shipbuilding. Behind the industrial background of these two cities lays a history of raging fires that have consumed landmark buildings, businesses and even entire city streets.

The widespread destruction that these blazes caused often required the assistance of fire departments from the various southern Maine communities. Through working together, these communities have been able to quell incredibly violent and costly infernos that have consumed both sides of the Saco River.

About the Author and Exhibit

Dean Thomas Smalley is a graduating History major at the University of New England. He has been on the design team for two different exhibits for the Saco Museum in Saco, Maine, and has done the lighting for two others. This is his first solo exhibit.

"I chose this project because I felt that it would be something that would spark interest in a great number of people. Biddeford and Saco have a richly intertwined history and I feel that it is important that connection is both demonstrated and preserved."

This exhibit was created as part of a semester-long internship and collaboration between the University of New England and McArthur Library's Archives + Special Collections.
